Lauren Kelly founded U.S. Military Television Network after observing the treatment of military personnel and their families in a town in which she was living. She was compelled to support the military and their mission.
In 1985, Ms. Kelly formed a USO type military entertainment troupe to entertain the military and raise morale. Her troupe, News From Home, comprised mostly of former Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, performed at air shows, enlisted clubs, officers clubs and NCO clubs. During her five-year stint, she began to listen to the concerns and needs of military personnel and their families. She found that the military needed more than a group of classy Texas gals singing and dancing for an hour to raise morale. They would need something to sustain morale on a more permanent basis.
In effort to start that mission, Ms. Kelly moved to San Diego, California in August of 1990, to produce and air programming through a local cable TV provider to Southern California military installations. When Ms. Kelly and the Vice President of the cable company met with local military flag officers, Ms. Kelly was stunned to find that the Vice President was passing her programming off as his own. It was then that she elected not to air her programs through that provider's dedicated military channel, and decided to set out on her own and start a television network about the military she knew.
She spent the next 10 years receiving letters of support, researching television industry and military standards in order to merge these two powerful entities. During that time, she earned a degree in Radio/TV/Film and volunteered as a producer, editor and on-camera talent at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base television station KPEN. She has appeared as a guest on the "Oprah Winfrey Show", the "Leeza Show", the television series "Dallas" and "Dance Fever", as well as national television commercials. Ms. Kelly has been a member of the Armed Forces Broadcasters Association ( AFBA), U.S. Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association (USMCCCA) and the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA). She remains the President and CEO of USMTV today.
